The property was originally part of the historic (but long-since fragmented) Corbin estate – as evidenced by likes of Château Corbin, Grand Corbin Despagne and Corbin-Michotte. Through successive owners, the Château Grand Corbin property was purchased by Guillaume Ignace Bouchereau, a sugar cane plantation owner, who established vines in the area in the late 17th Century.
As with so many estates, Grand Corbin was siezed as a public asset in the French Revolution, and saw numerous owners. Since 2010, the estate has been owned by Groupe SMABTP, owners of several Bordeaux châteaux including Château Cantemerle in the Haut-Médoc and Château Le Jurat in Saint-Émilion.
In 2012, the group’s adjacent estate, Château Haut Corbin, was awarded Grand Cru Classé status and the two Corbin estates were combined under one label.
The estate covers almost 29 hectares (72 acres) of vineyard land planted to 70 percent Merlot, 25 percent Cabernet Franc and 5 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines average 40 years old and soils are composed primarily of light sands over blue clays.
A second wine labeled Les Charmes de Grand Corbin is produced from the same grape varieties. Some 100,000 bottles of the grand vin are produced annually, with around 75,000 bottles of the second wine produced.
